OVERVIEW
What is CMU Board?

The CM-YOU Board project is a human-centered interaction design initiative created for the Carnegie Mellon University administration, specifically for the David and Susan Coulter Welcome Center. The goal of the project is to enhance visitor experience by providing an engaging and personalized introduction to the CMU community, its diverse offerings, and campus environment.

The CM-YOU Board is a digital interactive display that allows prospective students, visitors, and faculty to explore key information about the university in a more immersive and user-friendly way. The board leverages interactive touch technology to facilitate intuitive navigation through various sections, offering insights into academic programs, student life, campus events, and CMU’s global network.

CHALLENGE
What Problem does the Current Welcome Center Face

David and Susan Coulter Welcome Center, located in David A. Tepper Quadrangle, opened to the public in the fall of 2018. In a press release at the time, Beth Wiser, Director of Visitor Experience, said, “The idea is to have a destination in the heart of campus where visitors can come to experience a bit of CMU. They can engage in our story and leave with a memorable and postive impression,” Since the sapce serves as the starting point for campus tours, it is often the first physical touchpoint prospective students and their families have with the university. Through layout, imgaes, technology, and staff, the Coulter Welcome Center intends to represent Carnegie Mellon University and help prospective students and their families understand how it differentiates itself from other insititutions. The hope is also that prospective students see their potential to be part of the university.

While the Coulter Welcome Center has served this role for the past five years, many believe that the space and the campus visit experience is not achieving all of its intended goals. There is a disconnect between the intentions for the space and how it is currently used and perceived, and there are opportunities to better tell stories and emotionally connect with visitors.

Therefore, we aim to be working to answer the question:

How might we express Carnegie Mellon University’s culture, brand, and hospitiality in a way that fosters feelings of belonging in prospective students and their families?
